To summarize the 5 films I saw. 0. The Other Half (China) Didn't get the chance to see it, hope I could have. 1.Slumming (Austria/Switzerland): A story of the life of a rich young lad and a homeless old fart, a process to find themselves and where they stand in life. This film is my favorite among the five. It has very unique and poetricaly sophisticated story telling. The rap at the beginning and the end of the film is like a mad dreamer's murmuring echoing in my mind. The rap is extremely powerful, those are exactly the words you want to shout out while taking a subway at night. Highly recommended! 2.Sound of Sand (Belgium/France) In the desert water is life. This is a family's journey to survive. 3.Orange Revolution (Ukraine) A doc film of the revolution in Ukraine in winter 2004. That's an unforgettable winter in deep snow, it was the time that I was hopelessly depressed while hectic with job applications, doing boring and endless research, and personal crisis with where I was going and where my life was. At the same time, one friend from Ukraine worried about this Orange Revolution going on in her country, which inspired our deep conversations about ... the usuals... hope, life and love. And here it is now, mess media follows up social events so quickly that it's already on the screen. One thing I was so impressed is that rock bands played a significant role in their politics. The film featured three bands and THE popular rap during the revolution. 4. Silly Age (Cuba) Again, a story of social change, and this time it's Cuba. A boy's memory of that time and life with his mom and grandma. It seems very Italian though and reminds me of 'Molina'. 5. Along the Ridge (Italy) This is a real Italian film featuring a falling apart family. A family of a single dad, two kids, and a constantly running away mom (because her 'pussy always itches for more' as the dad put it in the film). The performances of the father and the little son are the treasure of the film. While waiting in line in the women's bathroom after the film, I picked up one woman's talk to another: 'There are a lot of shouting... huh ... in the film.' I was quite surprised that it could be described in such a way. Anyway, if you have dived into the fabricated emotional frustrations you wouldn't have cared about the volume of the shouts. |
